Creating a high-performing, value-enhancing board is a matter of addressing numerous issues. This involves having the right people on the board and encouraging a positive board culture, distributing information easily as well as streamlining processes and conducting regular evaluations. It’s not an easy task and there are many issues. Some of these issues are easy to solve, while others are more difficult. The good news is, most of these problems can be solved.

The most frequent issue is when boards fail to establish the internal structures and processes it needs for carrying out its assessment responsibilities. This usually means establishing committees and officers who are accountable for gathering, analyzing and regularly present performance data to the Board.

If this isn’t done, the board may not be able to recognize its strengths and weaknesses. This could prevent the board from taking action to improve its performance.

A board that doesn’t follow through on its agreed-upon improvement plans is another problem. This is often the case when the board is distracted by other issues and loses focus on what was identified during its previous assessment.

One of the best solutions to this issue is for boards to conduct an exhaustive self-evaluation at least every year. The built-in survey in BoardEffect helps ensure accuracy and can be used as a basis for a full board evaluation when needed. This method allows boards to ensure that they focus on the most important issues, and that their efforts contribute to the overall success of the business.
